WHEN TO CLEAN WINDOWS
The Best Time to Clean Windows in Bend
Clean too early and pollen or smoke undoes the job in a week. Wait too long and sprinkler spots start to set. Here’s a Central Oregon calendar built around what actually lands on your glass.
The Short Answer
For most Bend homes, the two cleanings that count are early summer, once the ponderosa pollen has dropped, and fall, once smoke season is over and before the snow. If you clean only once a year, make it fall. It clears a whole summer of dust, ash and sprinkler spotting and leaves your glass clear for the darker months.
Bend’s Window Year, Season by Season
| Months | What’s hitting your glass | Good time to clean? |
|---|---|---|
| December to February | Snow, road grime near streets, frost | Interiors yes; exteriors only on mild, dry days |
| March to April | Snowmelt splash, juniper pollen | Wait if you can; pollen is just starting |
| May to June | Heavy ponderosa pollen, sprinklers turn on | Late June, after the yellow dust stops |
| July to August | Dust, sprinkler spotting, often smoke | Only if needed; watch the smoke forecast |
| September to October | Lingering smoke, needle drop | Yes, after the smoke clears |
| November | First snow, cold snaps | Early in the month on dry days |
Spring: Hold Off Until the Pollen Drops
It’s tempting to clean on the first warm day in April. The trouble is that juniper pollen starts around March, and ponderosa pine follows in late spring with the yellow dust that coats everything in town. That pine pollen is coarse and waxy. It doesn’t bother most allergies much, but it sticks to screens and glass and comes right back after a cleaning. Our guide to juniper and pine pollen on windows covers how to clean it off.
If the winter grime is driving you crazy, do a quick exterior rinse in spring and save the full clean for late June, when the pine has finished.
Summer: Watch Sprinklers and Smoke
Bend gets very little rain from June through September, so nothing rinses the glass. Two things build up fast.
- Sprinkler spots. If any heads reach your windows, check them now. Spots removed after one season come off easily; spots left for years can etch.
- Wildfire smoke. Oregon DEQ has tracked a clear rise in smoky days, and Bend has logged weeks of unhealthy air in bad years. As long as fires are burning, ash keeps settling, so a mid-summer cleaning can be wasted in a heavy season. Once it clears, here’s how to clean wildfire ash off windows safely.
Summer is still a fine time for inside glass, and for businesses that need clean storefronts through tourist season.
Fall: The Most Important Cleaning of the Year
Once the smoke clears, usually in September or October, it’s the best window of the year. The sprinklers are winding down, the pollen is long gone and the weather is still dry and mild enough for outside work.
- It clears a full summer of dust, ash and sprinkler spotting before it sits all winter.
- It’s the time to clean screens and tracks before snowmelt turns the dust into mud.
- Clear weep holes now so melting snow can drain from your window frames.
- Clean glass lets in more low winter sun, which you’ll notice in December.
Fall is also the right time for skylight cleaning, before roofs get snowy and icy.
Winter: Interiors and Mild Days
Exterior cleaning in freezing weather doesn’t work well. Water and solution can freeze on the glass, and ladders on icy ground are a bad idea. We do outside work on dry days above freezing and focus on inside glass the rest of the time. Winter is also a good time for inside cleaning, since fireplaces and wood stoves leave a film on nearby windows.
Don’t chip ice or packed snow off windows. Let it melt. Cold glass can crack or chip more easily.
How Often Different Homes Need Cleaning
- Most homes: twice a year, early summer and fall.
- Homes under big pines or near open land: add a mid-summer outside cleaning in a light smoke year.
- Vacation rentals: before peak season and between busy stretches.
- Storefronts and offices: monthly or more often.
- Homes selling or finishing a remodel: right before photos or walkthrough.

Window Cleaning Timing Questions
What month is best to clean windows in Bend?
Late September or October is the best single month in most years, once smoke season ends and before snow. Late June is the other good window, right after the pine pollen drops.
Should I clean my windows before or after pollen season?
After. Ponderosa pollen in late spring coats everything, so windows cleaned in April or May often need it again by June.
Can windows be cleaned in winter in Bend?
Inside, any time. Outside, only on dry days above freezing, since solution can freeze on the glass and icy ground makes ladder work unsafe.
How often should I clean windows during smoke season?
Usually wait until the smoke clears for good. If you need clean glass sooner, rinse before washing so the ash doesn’t scratch.
